What happened?
Shares of semiconductor packaging and testing company Amkor Technology (NASDAQ:AMKR) jumped 7.1% in the pre-market session after the company announced a new $1.3 billion agreement with NVIDIA to expand capacity in South Korea, bringing total multi-year commitments across Arizona and South Korea to $3 billion.
Amkor stated in an announcement that the funding supports capacity expansion initiatives to accelerate artificial intelligence infrastructure. In a coordinated release, NVIDIA confirmed collaborations with Amkor and other supply chain partners to scale manufacturing capabilities across substrates, advanced packaging, testing, and optical engines. Securing substantial multi-year commitments from a premier AI chip designer provides Amkor with clear revenue visibility and reinforces the indispensable role of advanced packaging in meeting high-performance semiconductor demand.
After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $42.94, up 3% from the previous close.

What is the market telling us
Amkor’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 68 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 5 days ago when the stock dropped 2.8% on the news that investors weighed escalating borrowing costs and Federal Reserve remarks emphasizing price stability over rate cut signals. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh stressed that maintaining price stability remains the central bank's primary mandate, while deliberately avoiding signals regarding the future trajectory of interest rates following an earlier rate hike. The prospect of persistent higher borrowing costs creates significant friction for high-growth sectors, particularly artificial intelligence and semiconductor firms that require substantial capital expenditure to finance advanced chip design, research, and fabrication infrastructure. Higher interest rates also reduce the present value of projected long-term cash flows, prompting investors to reassess rich valuations across technology equities. Consequently, market participants adopted a cautious stance, triggering broad-based downward pressure and heightened volatility throughout the chipmaking ecosystem as financing conditions tighten.
Amkor is flat since the beginning of the year, and at $42.94 per share, it is trading 54.1% below its 52-week high of $93.55 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Amkor’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,854.
